Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1800 to 1832. A timber-framed house of probable late-16th century date, extended to the east c.1823 with a three-storey front extension in red brick, giving a Regency façade to Church Road. The most notable feature of the house is the fine French scenic wallpaper, hung in the back parlour of the house c.1836. The building is located in Oare, a small village on the river Swale. The maritime economy of fishing and oyster dredging, together with the ancillary trades of shipping, boat-building and merchantile activity influenced Oare's riverine character. From at least the early 19th century to the early 20th century, Homeside was owned and occupied by the Redman family, a family of oyster merchants and landowners. The enlargement of the house and its adornment with wallpaper was undertaken by various members of the Redman family, and may have signalled their social and commercial aspirations. The wallpaper itself is a rare British example of French scenic wallpaper of the early 19th century. Scenic paper represents the highest achievements of French design and technological expertise in the manufacture of wallpaper. The Homeside paper comprises two different sets, Les Incas and Paysage de Télémaque dans l'île de Calypso, both printed by Joseph Dufour of Paris in 1818. The national significance of the paper is recognised in the Grade II* designation of Homeside. The paper is in need of restoration but is of significance because it remains in its original setting, the social context of which is of intrinsic interest.

House with railings. Early C19. Red brick and plain tiled roof. Three storeys and parapet to hipped roof with stacks projecting at end left and at end right. Three sashes on second and first floors, 2 on ground floor, all with gauged heads. Central boarded door with semi-circular fanlight in gauged surround. Interior: room with French painted wallpaper hung in 1836. Scenes depicting the Conquest of Peru and the Telemachus legend (see Country Life, June 7, 1956). Railings to forecourt: cast iron, with fleur-de-lys and spear heads. (1-2)

This report is the result of Architectural Investigation undertaken for the South East Region of English Heritage between 2006 and 2007. The Investigation was undertaken to inform decisions regarding the conservation of the historic wallpaper of this Grade II* listed house, at the request of Richard Morrice, English Heritage Historic Buildings Inspector for Kent and East Sussex. The report is in three parts. The first part consists of a contextual account of the area and of the Redman family, who extended the house and decorated a room with French scenic wallpaper in the early 19th century. The second part gives a description of the building, whilst the third describes the wallpaper and its historical context. The report contains a bibliography is illustrated with photographs and plans.(3)
