Full Description

[TQ 9970 5100 - sited from plan.] There is a roughly rectangular earthwork of bank and ditch in Well Wood, just east of Long Beech Wood, between Charing and Callock Lees. At the south end of the east side there is a short outer rampart and at the north-west and south- west corners there are large deneholes. Aouth 200 yards south-east [TQ 9986 5077] there is a line of circular holes. [See AO/LP/62/99.] (1) The "earthwork" in Well Wood consists of a feeble bank and outer ditch, probably a woodland boundary or enclosure bank of no great age. At the N.W. corner of Well Wood (area centred TQ 9964 5114] there are two collapsed deneholes and the site of a third which is indicated by a depression now surrounded by a barbed wire fence. At the S.W. corner of the wood at TQ 9961 5095 there is another collapsed denehole filled with rubbish. In a spinney on the W. side of Green Lane at TQ 9987 5079 there is a row of four collapsed deneholes. To the S. there were probably more but they have been recently filled in by bulldozer. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) The two deneholes at TQ 9964 5114 have now been filled in. (3) Well Wood has been cleared and the area is now arable. There are no remains of the earthwork enclosure or of the deneholes at the corners of the wood. All are, however, depicted by siting symbols and described as "sites of" on the O.S. 25" 1970, at the following positions:- TQ 9964 5115; TQ 9964 5114; TQ 9965 5112; TQ 9961 5095. Although erroneously ascribed on Dombrain's plan (1), all five deneholes at Green Lane can be traced. [TQ 9986 5080] A circular depression 4 metres in diameter and 1 metredeep. [TQ 9987 5079] Two circular depressions 4.5 metres in diameter and 1 metre deep. [TQ 9987 5078] A depression 2.5 metres across and 1 metre deep. [TQ 9987 5077] An elongated hollow 10 metres by 4 metres and 1 metre deep. There has been some casual dumping in the last described, and all are overgrown with bushes forming part of a roadside verge. (4)
