Full Description
The following text is from the original listed building designation:
RAMSGATE HIGH STREET TR 3665 SE ST. LAWRENCE (north-west side) 6/204 Chest tomb of James and Mary Townley and 4 other railed tomb chests about 25 metres north west of Church of St. Laurence GV II Chest tomb to James (d.1817) and Mary (d.1839) Townley and others. Stone with iron rails. Large platform with moulded plinth, baluster corner piers, and reeded side panels with moulded and inscribed top slab. Spear head rails with urn finials - the panels intact but in need of refitting. This is arguably historically the most important tomb in St. Lawrence churchyard, since the Townleys were the developers (and in Mary's case architect) of most of late C18, early C19 Ramsgate which determines its present character (see for instance Townley House, Chatham Place, Spencer Square, Royal Road, Nelson Crescent, Royal Crescent etc.). Railed chest tomb 3 metres north-west. Early C19. Moulded base with plinth with piers incised with blind arches, raised and fielded moulded side panels and inscribed top slab with reeded edges. Rails with crescent finials and urn finial principals. Two railed tomb slabs south of Townley tomb, both with illegible inscriptions, in spear headed railed surrounds with urn finial principals. Identical inscribed slab in railed enclosure to south.
