Summary

Possible Early Medieval inhumation with iron buckle found in 1946. The site is at the base of a steep Downland scarp, on top of a spur of a south-south-west ridge, running towards Lenham. OD 145-150m. Bedrock chalk.

Full Description

[TQ 90355279]. A skeleton was found at map ref. 343712, War Edn. 1", Sheet No. 116, while digging a trench for a water main on 3.3.1946. The orientation was approx. NE-SW. Part of an iron buckle of doubtful age was the only find near the burial. (1) This burial was found on the south side of the Pilgrims Way when the water mains to a trough was being installed. The Find spot at TQ 9024 5280 was pointed out by Mr. Gasken of 'North Down' Lenham, adjoining. The present whereabouts of the skeleton and the buckle was not ascertained. (2) Additional bibliography.
