The following text is from the original listed building designation:
RAMSGATE HIGH STREET TR 3765 SE (south-west side) 8/179 No. 162 (The Sylvan Hotel) GV II House, now hotel. Late C17, altered mid Cl9. Rendered with red brick and flint to return elevations. Plain tiled roofs. Two storeys and attic with basement on plinth with cill band, cornice and parapet to hipped roof, with 3 gabled and bargeboarded dormers and stacks to rear left and to rear right. Regular fenestration of 5 sashes on first floor and 4 on ground floor, all in moulded surrounds, with basement openings to left and to right. Central recessed glazed door with rectangular fanlight in moulded surround with cornice on brackets. Right return with flint and rubble ground floor with blocked arched openings, red brick upper floor with moulded wooden eaves cornice, all indicating earlier origin of building.
