Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
RAMSGATE SPENCER SQUARE TR 3764 NE (north side) 12/382 Nos. 40, 41 + 42 (Churchill House School) 13.8.68 with railed area GV II Terrace row, now school. Circa 1802, rebuilt or remodelled circa 1840. Rendered with slate roof. Three storey and basement to main block, 4 storey end block to left. Four storey canted bay to left, each storey with modillion cornices, the top storey rising above parapet level. Canted oriel on 2nd Floor to right and 2 storey and basement canted bay below, and to centre left, all with sashes, and French doors on first floor with 2 central metal casements on 2nd floor. Tented verandah across whole first floor, with simple scrolls to piers and Gothick panelled rails. Two central doors of 6 raised and fielded panels the top 2 glazed, in fluted surrounds, and boarded door to left in C20 single storey porch. Simple rails to basement areas with urn finial principals. Left return (to Royal Road); 4 storeys with irregularly spaced glass. Ionic pilasters to cornice parapet and stacks to left. Three window bay section to right, with only 1 space on 2nd and 2 spaces on 1st floors glazed. Shallow 4 storey bay to left with different storey levels to right hand section. Half-glazed door in moulded surround to centre left, with different storey levels to right hand section. Half-glazed door in moulded surround to centre left. The facade treatment of pilaster and cornice runs over the adjacent number 1 + 3 Royal Road, and is taken from the decorative motifs of the rest of Royal Road (laid out 1827-36), and disguises the earlier construction of these buildings, possibly still the 1802 structures built for James Townley. See Busson 108-9.
