Monument record TR 36 NE 2356 - Former site of Whitfield Tower

Summary

Former site of a Grade II listed building. Main construction periods 1818 to 1818. A Beacon was formerly located near Northdown. It is indicated by a column of knapped flint. An inscribed tablet on this column reads 'Beacon erected 1818 by Trinity House'. It is uncertain when this beacon was demolished but a monument named 'Whitfield Tower' is marked on the Ordnance Survey historic maps (c.1858-1940).

TR 38026976. Beacon. Column of knapped flint. Tablet reads 'Beacon erected 1818 by Trinity House'. (1) [TR 38036972] Tower [NAT]. (2)

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
NORTHDOWN HILL 1. 5283 BROADSTAIRS Whitfield Tower TR 36 NE 5/132 II
2. Lord Holland built the tower "To the memory of Robert Whitfield Esquire. The ornament and under Thomas Wynne Esquire, the adorner of Kingsgate". Robert Whitfield sold his land to Lord Holland and then acted as agent and builder to him. The tower was blown down by a gale in 1818, but was re-erected by the Corporation of Trinity House as a guide to navigation. Built in 3 stages on a plinth. Flint-faced with cemented decorations. The lowest stage is square and the other 2 are octagonal. Trefoil pattern on all 3 stages. Onion-shaped finial.
