Full Description
[TQ 4762 4192] There was a bloomery at Blowers Hill or Mount Noddy, Cowden, Lat. 51 9' 25" N., Long. 0 6' 40" E. "There are very large minepits in the Noddy fields - a name for slag - and traces of ore. The small bloomery was probably cut up by the railway, as there is vermiform cinder in the little gill, extendinng for a few yards on both sides of the line and goods yard." (1) Strakers general grid reference is confirmed with a concentration of bloomery slag in the bed of the stream at TQ 4758 4186, and more down stream on the S.W. side of the railway line. The Noddy fields including Blowers Hill and Blowers Field are under pasture and with the exception of the group of mine-pits at TQ 4797 4194 no further evidence of iron working was noted. (2) TQ 476418 Cowden - appears in a checklist of all known Wealden bloomery sites. (3)
