Listed Building record TR 26 NE 1082 - CHURCH OF SAINT NICHOLAS

Summary

Grade I listed building. Main construction periods 1100 to 1899. The earliest church here (a chapel to Reculver) was almost certainly built in the late 11th century (St. Nicholas became popular in western Europe after the body of saint was brought from Myra in Southern Turkey to Bari in Italy in 1087). The west wall of the nave in its lower section probably dates from this period. And there was additions in the 12th (including a very fine mid- to late 12th century arcade that still survives), 13th 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and repairs in the 17th 18th and 19th centuries.
