Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1779 to 1837 Harbour cross wall, sluices, bollards, Dry dock, Basin gates, wing wall and Dundee steps. The cross wall was completed in 1779 to plans by Thomas Preston, they were built of granite. There are seven sluices in the wall which are also faced with granite. The inner basin has granite walls with iron wings and a pedestrian swing bridge. The eastern entrance of 1821 is bricked up, with original gates still in position. The wing wall to the inner basin was built in 1837 by Sir John Rennie, also of granite with eight anti-wave openings and twelve bollards across the cross wall. The dry dock, designed by Smeaton, was built from 1789 to 1791 and was extended in 1816. The Dundee steps were added in 1810, in Dundee marble, between the west pier and the cross wall.
