Full Description

TQ 52105695. A Middle Bronze Age axehead was found on the 1st October 1979 by Mr T Riddle, the operator of the crushing machine at the Bradbourn Gravel Pit, near Sevenoaks. The gravel digging on that day was taking place just east of the river Darent in the Grindstone Shaw area. Here about 2m of gravel is being extracted from the top ofthe Gault Clay Beds and an average of 1m of brown clay loam and top soil overlies it. The bronze palstave is 16cm long and has a splayed blade, the cutting edge is chamfered and there are faint traces of ribbing. There is no loop and the outer edges of the blade are bent, probably when it went through the gravel processing plant. This is the third axe to be found in the pit owned by Redland Gravel Limited (See TW 55 NW 50 & TQ 55 NW 51) (1)
