Full Description

["A" - name TQ 994 608] Roman remains found [NAT] (1) Three Claudian urns in the Royal Museum, Canterbury, presented c. 1790 by Sir Samuel Auchmuty, owner of Syndale House, are thought to have been found at the position where "Roman remains found" is marked on the O.S. maps; coins ranging from Vespasian to Arcadius have been found in the park. In 1915, soldiers digging a refuse pit on the edge of the embankment about 120 yards N.W. of the front door of Syndale House, found a 1st century Samian patera (form 15), possibly part of a burial group. [Sited from plan in (2) to "B" - TQ 9933 6101.] In 1923 a rubbish pit was excavated by Colonel Hawley who found 1st - 3rd century potsherds, pieces of burnt wattle-and-daub, many animal bones and a coins of Commodus. [Sited from plan in (3) to "C" - TQ 9993 6095] and in 1925 Hawley found [at "D" - TQ 9985 6100: sited from plan in (3)] a paved hearth and flint wall foundations. (2-5) The urns are in the Royal Museum, Canterbury, and the Samian plate is in the Maison Dieu Museum, Ospringe, but the present whereabouts of the coins was not traced. There is no record of subsequent finds from the area which is part arable, part parkland. (6) KE 72 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (7)
