[TQ 96376250] Tumulus [NR] (site of) [NAT] (1) In a small coppice on the summit of Sandown, is a tumulus or barrow, which, from the hollowness at the top of it, seems to have been plundered of its contents. Excavation of a slightly elevated part upon Sandown revealed coarse Celtic pottery fragments with one or two pieces of bone, embedded in burnt earth and charcoal. It appeared that an oblong cist had been dug out, about 5ft long and 14ins wide. Whether the deposit was sepulchral could not be ascertained (2). Teynham: the earthwork or barrow at Sandown in this parish thought to be a Roman camp, has proved by excavation to be earlier. [see also TQ 96 SE 11] (3). Additional reference (4). The site of this barrow, which falls upon the highest point of Sandown, is still indicated by a faint, levelled mound in an orchard (5). There are no remains of this barrow. It was probably finally destroyed when the orchard was re-planted a few years ago (6). Additional reference (7,8).

Visible on a Google Earth image of 2013 as a ring ditch. A possible crosstrees is visible within the mound, though this could be the remains of the 19th century excavation.
