Summary

Grade II listed building. Main construction periods 1902 to 1902 Former Tonbridge Urban District Council Electricity Works. An early district power station of 1902. Purpose designed for DC supply generated with reciprocating steam engines. Much has been demolished but the power hall and offices survive. Now a museum.

Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. THE SLADE 5284 The Milne Museum TQ 5846 NE 4/119 II 2. Former electricity generating station,at time of survey a museum with exhibits of early electrical machinery from the South Eastern Electricity Board area. Built in 1902, the consulting engineer being Robert Hammond, an entrepreneur who was one of the early pioneers of the Brighton electricity generating scheme. Unusual Arts and Crafts style building influenced by Voysey. Red brick in English bond with stone dressings, nipped slate roof, 2 storey offices with one storey Engine loom behind, the latter having been extended by 2 bays at a later date in matching style. Root has 3 pebble-dashed gabled dormers with circular wooden louvres. Wooden modillion eaves cornice. 2 crenellated drainpipes. 2 slightly projecting chimneystacks, one with blank arch. 1st floor has left side hoist and right side 3 light casement with top opening lights, 15 panes in all. Ground floor has 3 4-light casements separated by stone architraves and with stone bands connecting tops and bottoms of all windows. Leaded lights. Narrow door up 6 steps with 15 panels to top half and large fielded panel to bottom. Left side elevation has 1st floor 3 light casement with later glass louvres inserted in top;fo the rear of this is the Engine Room extension, also in red brick, English bond. Gable end with pilasters, stone coping and ball finial. Blank arcading. 1st floor has 2 4'light casements with stone surrounds and linking bands and central 2 light window later blocked. Right side elevation has 2 blocked window openings on 1st floor and 3 blocked window openings on ground floor and is of orange brick. Engine Room on this side has been cement rendered with 1 4-light casement, Manager's office has an iron fireplace with brackets and green tiled surround and another fireplace with plumed capitals, fluted columns and a curved feature to the centre with paterae & swags and cornice with a band of swags. Some 5 panelled doors. The Engine Room, originally of 5 bays, was extended by 2 bays, the whole has blank arcading. Square pilasters to other side and lonic pilasters to sides of former switchboard panel. Roof of scientific king post form. The only surviving machinery from the building is an overhead crane. Included as a fairly early and architecturally elaborate example of an electricity generating station.

Built 1902 in Arts and Crafts style influenced by Voysey. 2 storey offices with single storey engine room behind, the latter having been extended by two bays. Roof has three pebble dashed gabled dormers with circular wooden louvres.(1 - 2)
