Full Description
A circular brooch, two circular pendants of gold also a circular amulet of porphyritic marble and a bead of same material, from a grave in the neighbourhood [of Teynham] acquired by Dr. Kennard in 1894. Sold at Sotheby's, 12 March 1895. Brooch and pendants bought by Pitt-Rivers. (1) A richly furnished Anglo-Saxon grave was discovered in April 1894 near Teynham. No particulars of the excavation are forthcoming. (2) [TQ 956 637] Inhumation cemetery (4). A gold and garnet disc brooch with a star design, a gold and garnet pendant (5), an openwork pendant of braided gold wire, and two circular pendant beads of porphyritic marble, threaded with silver wire, were exhibited at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries, London in May 1894 by George Payne. They were "found during the past month in a grave discovered in the neighbourhood of Teynham". In the possession of D. F. Kennard (3). The brickfields which apparently produced these finds were near Teynham station. [See also TQ 96 SE 6 and 39.] (3-5).
