House and shop. Early C18, earlier features are incorporated into the rear block. Part was converted to a shop in the late C19/early C20. Ground floor of painted brick, timber framing above clad with peg tile; brick stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof.
Plan: L-plan building. The main block long front faces south west onto The Square. It has a double-depth plan with front and back room either side of the central entrance hall and staircase. In fact the right rooms have been converted to the shop. A stack projects from the left end wall. A rear kitchen block projects to rear of the right end; it has an outer lateral stack. In fact the kitchen fireplace is probably C16, the only feature exposed earlier than the early C18. House is 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace.
Exterior: Symmetry of the 3-window front upset by late C19/early C20 shop front projecting forward from the right. Shop has canted bay window with central recessed central doorway; plate glass windows and moulded entablature. Ground floor Left is a C19 tripartite sash window with central 9-pane sash and flanking pilasters. The first floor windows and hipped dormers contain C19 and C20 replacement casements with glazing bars. In the centre stone steps up to the main front doorway which contains a probably C19 part-glazed panelled door. The flat hood above is early C18. Its moulded edges are carried round from a moulded timber frieze at first floor level. (A similar hood and part of the frieze show in the rear wall). The timber eaves cornice includes a modillion frieze. The roof is hipped both ends.
Interior: As far as can be seen the original framed structure is well- preserved. Exposed beams are plain chamfered. Most of the fireplaces are blocked but the C16 fireplace is exposed in the rear wing; its oak lintel moulded with a broad hollow chamfer containing a roll. Good early C18 joinery includes the open well stair; square newel posts with ball finials, closed string and turned balusters with blocks. A pine round-headed arch (fluted pilasters and moulded entablature with dentil frieze) between the 2 ground floor rooms of the house is early C18 but may not be in situ. Some early C18 2-panel doors off the stair landings. Original roof of tie-beam trusses with staggered butt purlins.
Corneys is a handsome merchant-status town house.
