Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
HADLOW HIGH STREET (south side) TQ 63 49 7/89 Little Corneys (formerly 20.10.54 listed as House;adjoining Terrace House on the north)
GV II
Small house, once including a shop. C16 with C19 and C20 extensions. Timber- framed structure, some brick underbuilding and frame is plastered on the front and some is hung with peg-tile to rear; brick stacks (chimneyshafts are missing); peg-tile roof.
Plan: 3-room plan house built end onto The Square and faces south west. The front room is heated by a rear axial stack. C20 stair rises at back of this stack and kitchen behind has an end stack. The third room was converted to domestic use circa 1980; it was a former single storey outshot. The centre room, the kitchen, is a C19 extension. The front room with its stack is the C16 part. It may be that this was originally part of a larger C16 house probably on the site of Corneys (q.v.) adjoining to the north east, but there is no evidence that it was.
Main house is 2 storeys, the back room is single storey.
Exterior: Gabled front has a doorway to right, window to left and single first floor window. Panelled door and casements with glazing bars date from circa 1980. Plain gable. The front is plastered but original framing shows towards the front of the right side wall. It is nogged with brick on the ground floor.
Interior: Front room has plain joists of large scantling. The fireplace is relatively large. It is plastered and the oak lintel is cambered and chamfered with a step stop to right. It appears that the lintel has been cut off to left suggesting that the original fireplace was even larger. Single bay roof above with end tie-beam trusses, mostly plastered over but queen struts show. The kitchen has plain carpentry detail and the fireplace has a segmental brick arch.
Little Corneys is one of a varied group of listed buildings in the middle of Hadlow.
