Full Description
Beacon Hill telegraph station, part of the late 18th century Admirality Shutter system was erroneously sited by Mead (1a) at a hill of that name above Luton, Chatham. From the sequence of stations given in a letter from the Navy Board to the Secretary of the Admiralty 5th, December 1795, it is clear that the Beacon Hill about two miles west of Faversham is meant. The exact site would seem to be indicated by `Telegraph Bank' marked on the Kent OS (shown at TQ983609 on OS 6" 1967) (See Illustration card for plan) (On OS 1st Edt 1" 1819 Beacon Hill is shown as being at the site of the present Beacon Farm TQ 983611 ie adjacent to Telegraph Bank) (1-2)
