Full Description

Inspection of a newly grubbed and ploughed apple orchard in late 1986 revealed a scatter of medieval potsherds. The site (TQ 954 618) is located within a few paces of Cellar Hill Lane and within half a kilometre of the line of Watling Street at Teynham. Some kind of previously unsuspected settlment was a possibilty. A 10 X 1m slot was excavated across the main concentration of the pottery scatter. Unfortunately the Group's diggers found undisturbed brickearth at a depth of only 30cm, and no sign of building structures. Further fragments of `piecrust' and other pieces indicative of Medieval date were found. Fieldwalking revealed debris from a wide range of dates in the vicinity.(1)
