Full Description

[TQ 94406207] Jeffries Cottages [NAT] (1) Jeffries on the Sittingbourne road from Lynsted is a fine specimen of a black and white yeoman's house. There is a very deep overhang, but a large corner post in the centre shows that one side of the building is older than the other. The floors, beams and doors within are of oak. Two of the original lead-light windows remain. The timber frame rests upon foundations of flint. (2) "Jeffries" (nameplate) is a single private residence, in fair condition, the south half being the older. The upper storey is jettied along the east face. An original oak mullioned window adjoins the old oak front door at the N.E. corner. The rear is nogged with modern brick, with weatherboarding over the upper storey. GP/AO/59/196/6 from East. The structure is comparable with other half-timbered buildings in the district which are Tudor. (3) Jeffries: re-visited and still as described above. (4) Jefferies, Claxfield Road, Lynsted. Grade II. 15th and 16th century. Timber framed and exposed with plaster infill and plain tiled roof. L-shaped plan, the shorter wing to left the truncated 15th century building. Evidence of former extent of older wing. (5) (TQ 94406207) Jeffries (NR) (6) Jeffries, Lynsted - not mentioned in Buildings of England. (7)
