In 2012 the building was converted to residential use. During this the Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a survey of the structure. The building was originally a three-bay timber-framed building. Dendrochronological dating showed it to have been built in c. AD 1555. It is thought that it was originally built as an agricultural or industrial structure. There were three rooms on the ground and on the first floor. Those on the first floor were not linked and two may have been accessed via stairs on the rear exterior wall of the building. The interior was poorly lit (one original window was located with surviving mullions but no evidence of a shutter). The building was extended with a fourth bay added to the south-west end in c. AD 1578. This bay was end-jettied. It is not clear when the building was converted to domestic use but a 17th century glazed window suggests it could have occurred by this date. A large rear wing was added in perhaps the late 18th century. Further 18th and 19th century additions are more certainly of domestic character. The building was used as an inn from at least the middle of the 18th century. (2)
