TQ 5956 IGHTHAM THE STREET 5/13 (south-east side)
Ightham Place GV II*
Late C18 house extended by William Burges in 1869 for the Rev James Sandford-Bailey. C18 wing to right, taller Burges wing to left, crossing the T. Right wing. Red brick with plain tile roof one ridge stack to right. Two storeys; 4 windows originally, all glazing bar sashes, that in second bay, from left replaced by blank panel. The original doorway below has been blocked and replaced by a small stone-dressed window with one mullion. Left wing. Three-sided apsidal end to front. Uncoursed squared rubble stone with steeply pitched tiled roof and ridge cresting. Single windows with trefoil heads in left-hand and centre bays of apse, main entrance of house in right-hand bay. Arched doorway surround to stout double-doors with foliated metalwork. Large pentice hood over. Garden front. Burges wing with gable over topped by coping and kneelers. Wide mullion transom ground floor window with blind trefoiled heads smaller mullioned window above. Interior: Entrance hall with barrel-vault and 2-flight wooden stair leading up to landing. Panelled balustrade with punched out stars. North-east drawing room with very tall C13 French-type fireplace supporting bear, all in stone. East drawing room with Delft tiled fireplace, probably built for Raspit Hill but not seemingly used. Ightham Place was originally the Dower House for Ightham Court. Listing NGR: TQ5957756747 (1)
