Full Description
[TQ 924 648 - sited from Map A, No.13] In 1869, a Roman lead coffin, decorated with X-pattern in rope moulding, was found in Eleven Acres Field, Murston. It contained a skeleton and two or three fragments of glass bottles, one of which contained small bones. The coffin was afterwards melted down and used for sealing up the gas mains of Sittingbourne. In the same field, a bronze handle (of dog design), of a knife or dagger was found. It is not known if it was associated with the coffin (1-3). The Tithe Map shows "11 Acre" field centred at TQ 925 651(4). Additional reference (5,6).
