Full Description

Description from record TQ 65 SW 3 :
[TQ 60195304] Ch. (1) The church at Plaxtol is believed to have been a chapel temp. Elizabeth I (a.) and in 1637 permission was granted to the inhabitants to use the ancient and decayed chapel which had been in disrepair. A proclamation of Charles I (?) states that a new church was to be built, the chapel of ease being pulled down. By 1649 the present building was erected. In 1852 the church was completely restored by adding transepts and a chancel. The church consisted of a nave of four bays with no chancel as such and a western tower. The registers commence 1649. The present church, if it does not incorporate, stands on the site of the ancient structure. (2) The church is in use for ecclesiastical purposes. There is no dedication; notices refer to 'The Parish Church of Plaxtol'. (3) Checked and Correct: in normal use. (4) TQ 6053 PLAXTOL CHURCH HILL 6/20 (north side) Plaxtol Church II* No dedication. Church. Built 1649, restored 1852, chancel and transepts 1894. Coursed, galletted rubble stone nave and tower on stone plinth. Two-stage tower, crenellated with sole remaining restored 1649 window to west. Four-bay nave with gable south porch; C19 gable-parapet and knellers. North and south transepts with 3-light windows, south transept with semi-basement entrance. Boarded and ribbed door, dripmould over. Three-light west window. Corner buttresses round east end, that to north-east on north transeptal chapel arched allowing walkway through. Interior. Original rectangular 6-bay church visible inside. Pointed tower arch. Hammerbeam roof resting on tripled octangonal stone wall-shafts. King posts over. Wooden tie-beam truss roofs in transepts. Raised chancel with barrel-vault supported by carved brackets on imposts. Marble reredos contianing 3 wooden relief of the Last Supper, probably Flemish C15. Later relief panel of the parting of the Red Sea in south transept. C17 pulpit, panelled with introduced figure reliefs. Pair of Rococo brass chandelliers, dated 1785. Monument to Thomas Dalyson, d.1741, in the form of a Baroque cartouche. TQ 6053 PLAXTOL CHURCH HILL 6/17 (north side) Baldwin Family Tomb in Plaxtol Churchyard 20 yds north of west end II Baldwin family tomb enclosure. C18 and early C19. Three headstones, one double, with 4 body blocks, in centre. One table tomb at each end, both with panelled sides and rusticated corners. Surrounded by spearhead railings with vasehead standards on ashlar plinth. (5) Plaxtol Church. Built in 1649, as the inscription over the south doorway records. That hardly seems a probable date, at first sight of the ragstone church. West tower, nave with short transepts, and chancel. More information on the east wall: enlarged 1852, chancel erected 1885, enlarged 1894. But that is wrong, as photos of 1889 in the church show. At that date it was a wide, long, but simple rectangle. In fact chancel and transepts are all of 1894, by Robert Pearsall. All windows but the lower west window were renewed in 1852. The doorway is 15th century and may have been salvaged from the pre-existing chapel. The window tracery looks 17th century in the patterns, but 19th century in the mouldings. No cusping, but in the north transept north window (original east window) ogeed intersecting tracery, and the nave windows have inside-down drops over two plain pointed lights. This is the sort of minimally Gothic design one expects yet Petries early 19th century drawing shows only late Perpendicular windows of three cusped lights. The nave interior and tower arch is of 1649. (6)
