Full Description

[TQ 4590 4067] There was a bloomery at Stony Croft, Cowden, Lat. 51 8' 46" N., Long 0 5' 10" E., near Waystrode Manor House. A large deposit can be seen "in both banks of the stream, some 5 or 6 feet below the meadow surface. The cinder had probably been dumped into the bed of the stream, which cut through it at a later period."(1) With the exception of two fragments of furnace slag from the line of an old track near Strakers grid reference no evidence of iron-working was found.(2) TQ 459406 Cowden - appears in a checklist of all known Wealdon bloomery sites.
