Full Description
A terret found at Bapchild. It is now a dull green and its enamels are discoloured. The bronze surrounds a ground of crimson enamel, through which runs a meander design ornamented with spots of cobalt blue. The flat iron bar by which it was made fast to the horse's collar was broken in ancient times, and by reason of the friction of the reins, the inner surface of the ring is worn. The terret is now in the British Museum. (1) A portion of horse gear, which may safely be assigned to the close of the Bronze or Celtic period, the property of Mr T. Wills, exhumed sometime since at Bapchild, about 2 miles from Sittingbourne, Kent. It is of bronze, covered with a green patina. The sunk portions bear traces of red enamel, whilst the broader parts of the meander still retain little discs of the same material of a deep sapphire blue colour. A fine line is engraved throughout the length of the meander, and the cresant has a sort of milling along its edge. (2) Mention of Bapchild "terret" in article on La Tene objects. (3)
