TQ6857 SWAN STREET 1156-0/3/156 St Mary's Abbey Guesthouse 25/08/59 (Formerly Listed as: SWAN STREET St Mary's Abbey)

Guesthouse to abbey. Remains of C14 hospice. Later used as stabling with early C19 and early C20 alterations and extensions. Ground floor of stone rubble with ashlar quoins and stone chip galleting. Deep plinth. 1st floor cement rendered. Tiled roof with stone chimneystacks. 1st floor has continuous window of 20 lights with cinquefoil heads, 12 blocked. Ground floor has 3 early C19 triple windows and 2 larger windows set in former doorways. Right side elevation has 2 buttresses and 5-light bay. Gabled stone porch to right c1968. T-wing attached to right-hand side of stone rubble with tiled roof. 2 storeys with cambered headed casements. Lounge has cross beams, one supported on a stone corbel, C20 Baronial-style stone fireplace and stone arch with wooden curved settle to curved window. another room has a similar stone fireplace. Original timbering reported at 1st floor level both to walls and roof but only ground floor seen. (Buildings of England: Newman J: West Kent and the Weald: 576).
