TQ65NE TOWN HILL 1156-0/1/163 (West side) No.38 Rose Cottage

Cottage, formerly a public house called 'The Volunteer'. Timber-framed building rebuilt in C17, altered in C18 and refaced in early C19. Built sideways to the street. Stuccoed on deep plinth with very steeply pitched tiled roof with 1 brick chimneystack. End quoins. 2 storeys. 2 windows. Front has two 16-pane sashes. Central round-headed doorcase with blank fanlight and 6 flush-panelled door, the top 2 panels glazed. Elevation to Town Hill has two 12-pane sashes with cambered heads to ground floor. 3 cross-shaped iron ties. Blank panel to 1st floor and thick band to both elevations which originally had the name of the public house. (Cozier P: Survey of buildings in West Malling: ITEM 1).
