Full Description

There was, till recently, a wood called Pett Wood, about half a mile south of Woodstreet House. In this woodland stood a small house - more like a bungalow, of one floor only - called Moat Cottage. It is now in the open field, but it is surrounded still by a moat (now dry). No explanation of the moat is forthcoming, but the cottage may have been of the nature of a gamekeeper's lodge. Its isolated position is peculiar and may possibly be on the site of an older building once connected with Pett Court [Kent 33 SW 7]. (1) TQ 93496074. A large earthen mound is situated upon level ground on the top of a north-south ridge at a height of 200ft. O.D., a position commanding a wide expanse of the Thames estuary to the north. It is circular on plan, measuring 23.0m in diameter by 1.5m in height, and is surrounded by a large ditch, 1.0m in depth, partly waterfilled. There is no outer bank, save perhaps a fragment in the north-east quadrant, which may only be recent clearance. A small cottage stands upon the mound which has suffered considerable mutilation. The tithe map for Bapchild dated 1839 shows an area of water representing the northern side of the site. No house is shown nor any other details. It is evident from this that the waterfilled ditch and mound were in existence before the erection of the cottage. No field names, other than "Parkfield" immediately to the east. The mound is similar in general appearance, dimensions and topographical position to one in Hurst Wood, Statisfield, some 6 miles S.S.E. (see TQ 95 SE 4) which was excavated and proved to be the site of a medieval post-mill. Published survey (O.S. 25" 1960) correct. (2) Not listed in the county checklist for moated sites in Kent - December 1979. (3)
