Full Description
[TQ 938646] Telegraph Hill, site of Telegraph Station:- Chatham, Sheerness and Deal (Joint) Lines 1796. (1) The first station on the Sheerness Branch of the Admirality Shutter Telegraph (See Illustration card for plan) was at a field near Tonge, four miles north-west of Beacon Hill (TQ96SE33). The OS Marks `Telegraph Hill', a modest eminence 30 chains south of Tonge Green, c 2 1/2 miles north-east (should be south- east) of Sittingbourne, and only a little north of the Callum Hill (TQ86 NE 45) - Beacon Hill sight line. Mead (1) placed the Station on the main line and took it to be the junction for Sheerness (2). Site photographs (3).
