SNODLAND MILL STREET Church of All Saints

(Formerly listed as Church of All Saints, SNODLAND) 25.8.59

I Parish church. C12, C13, C14, C15; west porch, c.1461, (BOE). Restored by A Blomfield, 1870. South-west porch-tower, nave (originally aisle-less), north and south aisles, (under single nave roof), west porch, chancel and south vestry off chancel. Full-scale tower with west porch. Early C14 style west window. Early C14 south windows C15 north windows between deep buttresses. Two encircled quatrefoils in east gable of nave. C13 chancel with two north lancets with early C14 window to west. C15 east window, probably restored.

INTERIOR: C14 tower arch containing reset doors from C15 roodscreen. Four-bay arcades, round piers with double-hollow-chamfered pointed arches, probably early C14, (BOE). C14 chancel arch. Roll string-moulding round chancel, rising over sedilia and cut by C14 window. Triple sedilia under arch with free-standing cusps. Fittings: wall painting: early C14 crucifixion on a south pier. [TQ 7075 6182] Church [NAT] (1) Snodland Church. Dedicated to All Saints, is mentioned in Domesday. Mainly C13th with traces of Norman work. Most of the windows are of the Decorated period and the Perpendicular tower has a porch also C15th, over which is a priest's chamber. Considerably restored 1804- 1865. (2) Snodland…."the walls of the church contain many Roman tiles". (3) Still in use for public worship. (4) Church of All Saints, Grade I. Parish church. C12, C13, C14, C15; W porch c1461, (BOE). Restored by A. Blomfield (1870). SW porch-tower, nave (originally aisle-less), N and S aisles, (under single nave roof), W porch, chancel and S vestry off chancel. Full- scale tower with W porch. A large ragstone church beside the Medway across a loop in the river from Burham old church (TQ 76 SW 14). Halling (TQ 76 SW 30) and Wouldham (TQ 76 SW 35), a mile or so upstream, are a second pair of riverbank churches. Is there any significance in their being sited like this? Full architectural description. (6) Snodland Church, dedicated to All Saints, is mentioned in Domesday. The present church is mainly of the C13th, but contains some traces of Norman work, including a light on the N side. Most windows, however, are of the Decorated Period. Originally there were six lancetwindows on each side of the chancel, as well as the E window, but the large window now replaces one of them while another was cut away for reconstructing the organ chamber. The windows on the N wall of the nave contain good ancient glass, of which the `Palmer' window dates from the C13th. The Calvary on the W side of one of the S aisle pillars probably dates from the C13th. The massive Perpendicular towerhas a porch at the base, also of the C15th, over which is a priest's chamber with remains of a fireplace. The doorway to the rood screen is still to be seen in the S wall, and some remains of the screen are to be found in the inner door of the porch. Considerable restoration was made during the incumbancy of the Rev Canon H.D. Phelps (1804- 1865) including the raising of the chancel floor, which was lower than that of the nave and the erection of the E window in 1845. The earliest register in the church dates from 1560. Watching brief undertaken at All Saints Church, Snodland in September and October 2001 to monitor renovation works uncovered a grave slab inside the church. The grave slab was 0.90m in width and 0.12m below the floor surface, it's length could not be establishedwithin the trench. The slab was probably made of Kentish Ragstone and lettering was evident but illegible, possibly in latin. Also uncovered graveslab in graveyard (TQ 76 SW 93)(10)
