Monument record TQ 97 SW 9 - Beacon, Medieval

Summary

Site of a medieval beacon. the beacon was certainly in use from 1570-1640, but it is clear from records of the late 14th century that Sheppey was a one of the first warning points for ships sailing up the Thames, and furze Hill would have been a natural site for such a beacon.
