Monument record TR 01 NE 5 - Dungeness Redoubt 1798

Summary

Earthwork redoubt of 1798. An octagonal strongpoint built to support the four batteries built at Dungeness in 1798. It was about 215 metres in diameter and originlly armed with eight 24-pounders mounted around the top of the ramparts. In 1803 it was reported that it was not defensible against a coup-de-main, neither could it be made so at any moderate expense. Slight traces of the parapet exist on top of the rampart
