Full Description
TR 085172. An earthwork Redoubt built in 1798. An octagonal strongpoint 215 metres in diameter built to support the four batteries built at Dungeness in 1798. Originally housing eight 24 pounders mounted around the top of the ramparst (some sources state eleven). In 1803 it was reported that it was not defensible against a surprise attack and neither could it be made so at any reasonable expense. The flattened counterscarp of Dungeness Redoubt is readily discernible from the top of the old lighthouse. (1)
