The following text is from the original listed building designation:
HAWKHURST RYE ROAD TQ 7630-7730 (south side)
Highgate 17/426 Royal Oak Inn (formerly listed as 20.6.67 The Royal Oak Hotel) GV II Public house. C16 and altered C18, c.1869 and c.1900. Timber framed and rendered and extended with painted brick. Plain tiled and slate roofs. Main range of 2 storeys with 6 glazing bar sashes in box frames on first floor, with oriels, c.1900, with mullioned and transomed windows to right on ground floor with half- glazed doors to right and to centre left in tall gabled porch, with mullioned and transomed pentice to left. Extensionn to left of 3 storeys, gabled, with stacks to left and to right. Two sashes on each floor, and mullioned and transomed pentice with glazed doors in gabled porch to right on ground floor. One storey and attic hipped extension to left, with flat roofed dormer. Interior: late C17 Wainscott to rear room, possibly imported. Projecting wing with extensive late C17 style Wainscott panelling, fluted and enriched pilaster surrounds and frieze and turned baluster stair, all early C20. Originally a row of houses, photographs show large stack to centre right, now truncated, and tile hung return elevations.
