Monument record TR 02 NW 14 - Probable 16/17thC Kiln Site East of Snave

Summary

A field strewn with red tile fragments, apparently wasters, with some sherds of a red ware, also probably wasters, a few of C16th/C17th stoneware (Siegburg and Bellarmine), and a few of coarse pottery, including one with tin-glaze. One of the accompanying maps to Hasted's `History of Kent' shows a double enclosure hereabouts, but it is not possible to identify it with this site.

Full Description

Area centred TR 02912983 - A field strewn with red tile fragments, apparently wasters, with some sherds of a red ware, also probably wasters, a few of C16th/C17th stoneware (Siegburg and Bellarmine), and a few of coarse pottery, including one with tin-glaze within the field, at TR 02852998, [A] is a small area of red earth and briguettage partly exposed by a drainage ditch. Two ponds in the field have been filled in recently. Pottery identified and retained by Maidstone Museum. One of the accompanying maps to Hasted's `History of Kent' shows a double enclosure hereabouts, but it is not possible to identify it with this site. (1)
