Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET
15/94 South Cottage 20.10.54 GV II
House. C16 or earlier origins, remodelled in the C17, roof raised in the late C19. Framed construction, the first floor weatherboarded, the ground floor brick; peg-tile roof; brick stack.
Plan: South facing, the present arrangement is a single depth main block, 2 rooms wide with a cross passage entrance to left of centre, both front rooms heated from end stacks. Various rear additions. The size of the wall-framing on the rear wall suggests that the house dates from the C16. The cross passage is probably an C18 arrangement.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Roof gabled at ends; massive projecting left end stack with a tall shaft and tile-hung set-offs. Asymmetrical 3-window front with a gabled C19 porch to left of centre with a tiled roof and lattice sides; C20 plank and cover strip front door. 2 early C19 20-pane sashes to ground floor right, to the left of the porch an early C19 canted bay with a 24-pane sash in the centre and 8-pane sashes in the outer lights. 3 first floor 3-light casements, 2 panes per light in probably C18 moulded frames; 2 late C19 gabled attic dormers with 2-light casements with glazing bars.
Interior: Ground floor left has a 4-panel ceiling of probably C17 intersecting beams, the left hand partition of the cross passage post-dates the ceiling; open fireplace with stone jambs. The wall framing of the left end of the house includes curved tension braces and jowled wall posts. Evidence that the right hand end of the house has been rebuilt.
Roof: Late C19. The present owner has a C19 photograph showing the house before the roof was raised.
South Cottage is an attractive and unspoiled evolved traditional house in a crucial position in an outstanding village.
