[TR 06312472] St. Lawrence's Church [NAT] (Site of) (1) The Church of St. Lawrence, New Romney, was in disrepair in 1511 and was probably pulled down between 1533 and 1539, certainly before 1549. A piece of glebe land (No. 75 on the Tithe Map) is still called St. Lawrence Churchyard but is too small for a burial ground. (2) This church was situated at TR 06322471 where in the 1930s foundations were uncovered and glazed floor-tiles found in situ (a). The site falls in a garden and there is now nothing to be seen. (3) At the far west end of West Street, New Romney, some walling laid in flint and stone bands, is said to be all that remains of the church of St. Lawrence. (4) The third parish church of New Romney was St. Lawrence which stood between the present High Street and Church Road. It had a high tower on which the town clock was mounted, and not apparently possessing a churchyard, had a small market on its south side. (5)
