CRANBROOK CRANBROOK COMMON TQ 73 NE 3/315 Tomb of Lady Sanderson in the grounds of My Lady's Cottage GV II
Chest tomb. c1817, Mason Richardson of Tunbridge Wells. Tapering diagonally fluted sarcophagus having pyramidal roof with oval flaming urn and end scrolls on 4 piers and 3 stone steps (originally railed). Circular medallions at each end and rectangular panels each side with inscription "Within this vault lie the remains of Lady Sanderson widow of the late Sir James Sanderson Bart by her 1st husband and of the Revd William Huntington S.S by her second. Born August 4th 1765 died in the Lord,November 9th 1817. I will never leave thee nor forsake thee - Her son and daughter who sorrow rejoicing have erected this monument". Lady Sanderson married a celebrated non-conformist preacher named William Hunt (later enlarged to Huntington) who began to preach while working as a coal heaver. The initials S.S stand for 'Saved Sinner' and was his own award, the more prestigious D.D. being denied him. Lady Sanderson lived at My Lady's Cottage after Hunt's death in 1812 and at her request was buried in the apple orchard there.
