Full Description
A house of franciscan (Grey) Friars was founded in New Romney before 1241; that being the year that Henry III obtained a grant for them to buy clothes. In 1243 there were 14 friars and the house cesased to exist probably c.1287. The house belonged to the main body of Franciscans known as Friars Minor, Conventual and was in the custody of London. (1,2) There can be little doubt that the abandonment of the Friary was the result of the great storms in the Marsh in or c.1287. (3) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (4)
