Monument record TR 02 SE 14 - Lydd branch railway (disused)

Summary

Dismantled Railway, opened 1884 and closed in 1967. In 1881, the nominally independent Lydd Railway Company obtained powers to build a line from Appledore to Dungeness, and in the following year to extend the railway to New Romney. Plans to build a large port at Dungeness were mooted, but never implemented. Between the wars, numerous summer bungalows developed betweeen Dungeness and New Romney, causing the New Romney branch to be resited nearer the coast in 1937 with two new halts at Lydd on Sea and Greatstone. Passenger trains ceased to call at Dungeness in 1953. The line was closed in 1967, although a siding continued to serve the new power stations at Dungeness, for moving waste products from the power station.
