12/529 Coach House adjoining south of The Glebe House
GV II
Former coach house, now used as a garage. Late C19. Flemish bond red brick with exposed timber frmaing above but back wall is coursed sandstone. Stone stack with brick chimneyshaft. Peg-tile roof.
Plan: Former coach house faces east backing onto Langton Road. Ground floor is taken up by a series of coach houses. First floor left a fodder store and to right a groom's room under a crossroof with a rear stack.
2 storeys with lean-to outshot on left end set back from the front.
Exterior: Rear has a series of large double doors to the coach houses. Most are original and hang on large iron hinges. The roof is gable-ended to left, the eaves descending to first floor level. To right there is the front gable end of the crossroof. It is jettied out on the ends of joists and is timber- framed containing a window with diamond panes of leaded glass. It also has a gabled dormer on the right (north) side with wavy bargeboards. The right end is also framed at first floor level and contains a loading hatch doorway, wavy bargeboards with a prominent pendant. Ground floor window below is 2-lights with lattice pattern of glazing bars and set to right of the lean-to. Roof over this end has a louvred ventilator on the ridge. The rear stone wall is blind except for a series of 3 cast iron breathers under the eaves to the fodder store. They are cast to ornamental patterns.
Interior: Not inspected.
This Coach house is one of a group of attractive buildings (most of them C19) on the approach to Speldhurst from the south.
