Full Description
The first coin to be struck at the mint at New Romney was in c.997 with Aethelred II's 'long-cross' type. From c. 975-1100, out of a possible thirty-nine coins to be minted, twenty-five were struck at Romney. After the first issue of William I was produced, the 'profile cross', the mint closed for c. ten years. The moneyer Wulfmaer was responsible for this coin, as well as having minted in the Saxon period, although two moneyers of the same name or family may have been involved. The mint reopened in c.1077, and from then all types were minted until 1100 except one issue of William II. On Williams's death in 1100, the mint closed until c.1123. Only three issues appeared during the reign of Henry I, with the mint finally closing inc.1134. (1-4) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (5-11)
