Full Description

"At Midley [TR] 031232 the ground was completely ploughed out. Small fragments of pottery lay in the soil and there was a suggestion of a former hollow way (the church [see TR 02 SW 1] lies well off any existing road)". (1)

Air photographs of Midley do not show any former building or streets. (2)

There was a church in Domesday and in the late C14th there were 43 adults but in 1570-1 a tax of 1/15 and 1/10 produced only 4s.2d. (3)

No traces of a Deserted Medieval Village are apparent on Aerial Photographs or on the ground. (4)

Midley. TR 031232. Listed as a deserted medieval village in Kent. (5)

Maurice Beresford and John G Hurst eds. Deserted Medieval Villages, 1971 (see 5 above), list 69 places for Kent in their County Gazetteers of Deserted Medieval Villages, In most cases there is nothing to prove that there was a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village. (6)
