Monument record TR 03 NE 5 - Roman site and finds, Aldington

Summary

Roman flue tiles and bricks were found in April 1935 and 1936 during construction of a tennis court at New Haytors. The site has produced two Roman sites, the first yielding sherds of mid-first century and the second foundations of a building. Post holes sunk in the second site came upon piers built of square tiles which suggested the remains of a hypocaust. Early Iron Age or Belgic sherds were also found in 1935. The finds had been kept in a cupboard which was broken into during the war when the house was occupied by troops.
