Full Description
Description from record TQ 74 SW 8 :
(TQ 71604072) Grovehurst (NAT) (1) II* Grovehurst 15th century with later 16th century additions. Originally a weaver's house and later belonging to the Austen family. Plastered elevations masking timber framed structure. The exterior plaster work covers closely spaced vertical half-timbering which can be seen from the inside. The main elevation towards the road has 2 gables to left with projecting 2-storey staircase wing and pentice porch at side. Projecting gabled wing to right with another pentice porch at side. Both pentice porches are probably 17th century additions. Connecting ridge tile roof brought down as pentice to rear. Ridge and end stack to right. All 3 gables over-sail on first floor with tile hanging in attic. Centre gable with moulded bressumers and supporting brackets. Attic bressumer carved with date 1641 and initials I.A. Centre gable with projecting bay window on ground floor and oriel window above with plastered cove. Projecting wing to right with mullioned and transomed windows on both floors. Projecting staircase wing to left with mullioned and transomed window on first floor. The interior is very interesting and one room has Elizabethan panelling with carved overmantel. In the attic are two king-posts and from the plan of the building as it is today it seems that it incorporates two Hall houses. III Outbuildings to the North East of Grovehurst Various weatherboarded farm buildings including large weather-boarded barn with half hipped ridge tile roof with lean-to and pentice additions. (2) Grovehurst. A lovely timeber-framed house, rendered white, the gables effectively hung with red tiles. In plan a T, the cross-wing at the right gabled front and back. The left two-thirds a symmetrical composition of two gables projecting at two levels, with a two-storeyed porch, now blocked, between them. On one of these gables the date 1641. Two curious pent-porches upset rhythm of the front. Long sweeping roof at the back. (3)
