Full Description
TR 05773521. Bonnington. A rapidly disappearing mound 80ft in diameter, with traces of a surrounding ditch was found on Pinn Farm. A limited excavation of the southern portion revealed a well defined ditch on the south and south-east with a causeway at the west. The ditch at the east had been cut through stratified layers of sandstone and charcoal to a depth of 4ft 9ins. All sections of the ditch contained a layer of C13th and C14th sherds only a few inches above the floor but on no part of the area excavated was there any trace of a building or habitation site. In the absence of evidence to the contrary it is more likely to have been a beacon site than a post-mill mound, although the limited excavation may have missed postholes. The ditch remains a mystery. (1) The mound at TR 05823519, is 21.0m in diameter and 1.2m in height. The ditch round the uphill, south side is 6.0m wide. The feature is upon a pasture-covered knoll at 80 feet OD. Visibility inland is very restricted by the higher surrounding hills, but a wide expanse of Romney Marsh and the coastline is overlooked, and the mound is probably a coastal beacon site. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)
