Monument record TR 03 NE 19 - Beacon mound (probable), Bonnington
Summary
A mound 21m in diameter and 1.2m in height, with traces of a surrounding ditch was found on Pinn Farm. A limited excavation of the southern portion revealed a well defined ditch on the south and south-east with a causeway at the west. The ditch at the east had been cut through stratified layers of sandstone and charcoal. All sections of the ditch contained a layer of 13th and 14th century pottery sherds only a few inches above the floor but on no part of the area excavated was there any trace of a building or habitation site. Visibility inland is very restricted by the higher surrounding hills, but a wide expanse of Romney Marsh and the coastline is overlooked, and the mound is probably a coastal beacon site.
