Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TQ 64 SW PEMBURY ROMFORD ROAD
5/419 Mays Barn
GV II
Former threshing barn. C17, converted to a house circa 1984. Timber-framed on brick footings. Exposed frame at ground floor level is nogged with brick, it is weatherboarded above. Peg-tile roof.
Plan: Roadside barn converted to a house backing onto the road and facing south south west, say south. Originally it had full height opposing doorways onto the threshing floor left (west) of centre.
Exterior: The roadside double doorway has been blocked and filled with framing like the original. One ground floor window left of the blocked double doorway is set in blocking of a former hatchway. The south side has 3 pairs of windows at ground floor level and four first floor windows, all relatively small C20 casements avoiding the timbers of the old frame. Present front doorway in blocking of the original double doorway and contains a C20 part- glazed door. Blocking of barn doorway is mostly glazed. Roof is half-hipped both ends.
Interior: Is largely the result of the C20 modernisation but it seems that the C17 framed structure is well-preserved. 4 bays. Wall posts with formed jowls. Straight arch braces to tie-beams. Clasped side purlin roof with queen struts.
