A building survey was carried out in 2021 by Archaeological Services Ltd which stated that “the weatherboard removal highlighted many adjustments that have been made to the original building mainly in the form of modern timber batons to support Celotex type cavity wall insulation board within original timber framing…Structurally the main timbers revealed were a soleplate and two principal posts in place from the original building, one to the north-east and the other to the south-west. The soleplate sits mainly on sandstone blocks however signs of repair are evident being supported by additional bricks and smaller sandstone pieces where the timber has aged. The principal posts appear to traditionally connect to the soleplate through a mortice & tenon joint.
Centrally placed a side girt runs across between the principal posts also using a mortice & tenon joint however, these have round wooden side pegs securing the joints together. Above the side girt five upright timber stud posts are fairly evenly spaced, the last one jointed into a downward brace at the north-east end beyond this a modern upright timber appears to have replaced the former stud post. The end of two offset tenons can be seen within the side girt below the downward brace joint. It is unknown what their exact purpose is but could be a former repair connected to the downward brace joint. The south-west stud post has a single round wooden peg in place. Adjacent to the right angle of this stud post and the side girt, a small area of orangey clay daub remains in place containing straw and animal hair (probably horse ?), possibly from the earliest build.
Most notably below the side girt is a centrally placed white painted window frame. This contains three, four pane windows, the central one being a casement opening with slightly larger panes and the other two are fixed. This is a modern replacement positioned where the original opening for window mullions would have been, between two upright timber posts running up from the soleplate and side girt, sitting on a timber girt supported by three evenly spaced upright timber stud posts, jointed together via mortice & tenons. Between the timber post to the south-west and the principle post a former doorway is now blocked and has two modern timber posts in place. Between the north-east timber post and its neighbouring principal post a short timber girt has a modern timber stud above, up to the side girt, and below down to the soleplate, replacements for the originals. Whilst not from the original build a section of lath & plaster was revealed to the south-west of the principal post along with some external plaster remaining in place that was covered by the weatherboarding but still partially obscured by live electrical cables on their removal” (from the original report, 2).
