HORSMONDEN GOUDHURST ROAD TQ 7040-7140 (south side) 7/31 Tainter Mead GV II
House. C16 and altered late C17 and extended mid C20. Timber framed and exposed with red brick infill on ground floor and plaster infill on first floor and with weather boarding to return elevations. Plain tiled roof. Probable hall house origin, with C20 wing to rear. Two storeys and attic on sandstone base with stack cluster at end left and rebuilt stack projecting at end right. Large gable to centre left on brackets with moulded bargeboards and with moulded pendant. Gable end of rear wing oversailing to centre right. Small 2 light mullioned window in gable, and 2 light mullioned window to left on first floor, with 3 three light mullioned casements and single light to right, and 3 three light mullioned casements on ground floor, the mullions all ovolo moulded with fillets. Present entry by boarded door in right return. Attached at rear left is a small outhouse, probably C17, with massive sandstone base, roughcast upper section and plain tiled roof, with tiled floor, the original use of which is unknown. Interior: fully framed interior, with chamfered jowls to main posts and Queen strut and clasped purlin roof with windbraces, probably C17 but re-using soot blackened rafters. Cambered tie beams also suggest an earlier roof fern.The end left stack is in a small framed bay which may originally have been a cross passage bay with a further framed bay to the left now missing, or it may have been a form of smoke bay at one end of the house. The chimney bresumner on ground floor inscribed: WM fb 1695. Framed addition to rear for newel staircase.
