The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TQ 64 SW CAPEL CHURCH LANE
5/239 Illegible headstone approx 5m south east of the chancel of the Church of St Thomas A Becket GV II
Headstone. Probably late C17. Upright sandstone slab standing approx 400mm high. Its head is shaped like a biforcated scroll and is carved with scrolls either side of a skull and crossbones. Below a fielded panel is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. It is so worn as to be legible only in perfect lighting conditions. The Christian name William can be made out but the date of his death is buried.
